People learn in different ways. Some people learn by doing things; other people learn by reading about things; others learn by listening to people talking about things. Which of these methods of learning is best for you?

People have different ways to learn and to remember many various things, events, dates, etc. Some people learn by doing things, others by reading books, listening, watching or writing. As for me, writing is the best method to remember things and information. And here are some arguments and examples.

First of all, I have a good understanding of the things when I do them many times. When I studied at school I didn’t write a lot in my copy-books. I listened to my teachers carefully and tried to understand them and then if it was necessary, very important or difficult to understand I wrote the information down. But when I entered university, everything has changed, even methods of studying. As I have chosen one of the most difficult languages – Chinese, I can’t do the same things as I did at school. To learn Chinese you should practice in speaking and writing as regularly as possible. You should write hieroglyphics every day. Only this way you can learn how to write in Chinese. And I’m trying to do my best. So, on the first place of the best methods of learning things is writing.

On the second place I find reading very useful. If you read the information very carefully many times, you will understand the meaning and remember it. Of course, sometimes it might not work. But I believe that there is no use to learn everything by hard without understanding the meaning itself. It is better to read once or twice understand it, paraphrase and say it in your own words.

On the third place is repeating things or information aloud. It doesn’t matter if you read and repeat or listen to someone and repeat. The main point is to repeat. It’s like with a parrot. If you repeat one word all the time and he will repeat it after you, after some time the parrot will remember this word and will know it by hard. As for me, this method is really good when I’m alone at home and no one disturbs me.

In conclusion, I prefer learning by doing things (especially writing & reading), because this way it helps me to understand things easily, also because it helps me to memorize things longer.

  1. Masha–

it was interesting for me to learn about your approaches to learning. I do too remember things better when I write them down.

However, the quality of this essay is not as good as those you wrote during the semester. Even though its answers the essay question, more specific examples are lacking.

I was quite upset too to see how you have formulated your thesis statement because we spent quite some time discussing how to write the thesis statement better. However, yours is written exactly the way I told you not to write them. Can you explain why you have written it using “arguments and examples” “template”

    *entered ART university
everything *has changed (WTense), even ART methods of studying
WORD ORDER: on the first place of the best methods of learning things is writing.
    *on (prep) the first place
Word order + language: On the second place I find reading very useful
I think it’d be better to say “My preferred methid of learning things is…” and “I’d rank ___ as second in importance”. Your way of putting it is close to the word-for-word translation.
no use *to learn (WF) everything by *hard (WW)

Can you explain why you did not manage to write this essay better? Any good reason?

  2. perhaps, I was interested in this topic so much and I was so into it that I forgot about writing rules, etc.
My thesis statement is formulated quite..strange, I agree. May be it is better to write like this: Writing is the best method to remember things and information for several reasons…and here are some arguments…

    • Masha,
yeah, it can happen that your great enthusiam about the topic does not allow you in the end to formulate your ideas clearly because you have too many. It’s possible. However, your new version of the thesis statement is not much of an improvement over the previous one. Instead of ‘For several reasons” you should enumarate them and then you would not need “here are some arguments”. Does it make sense?
